Swine flu: Mexico launches five-down shutdown

Officials in Mexico have begun a five-day shutdown in an effort to contain the spread of swine flu.

Health authorities in the country claim more than 160 have died of the virus, although the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated the official death toll currently stands at 12.

Mexican president Felipe Calderon has ordered government offices and private businesses not vital to the country's economy to close to prevent further spread of the infection.

And Mexicans have been urged to remain at home from today until next Tuesday.

"There is no safer place than your own home to avoid being affected with the flu virus," said Mr Calderon.

Restaurants in the capital, Mexico City, have also been ordered only to provide take-away food until next Wednesday.

The WHO kept its pandemic alert at five yesterday, one phase away from a full-scale global pandemic.
